Last winter I decided to finish a bucket-list project in my long-running survival world: collect all eight goat horns. I had beaten the dragon, built a messy but functional base, and tamed more wolves than I could count, but I had never gone out of my way to get rammed by a mountain goat. When I returned to the game in 2026, the core mechanic still worked the same way in my Java world, so I packed snow gear, a stack of blocks, and a lot of patience, and headed for the peaks.

The Horn Is a Tiny Instrument

A goat horn is exactly what it sounds like: the horn of a goat. Once you obtain one, you can right-click while holding it to play a sound. There are eight variants, and they are not just cosmetic duplicates. The first four sound like the Illagers raid horn, while the latter four are more out there. The important split is that the first four come only from regular goats, and the last four come only from screaming goats.

Regular goat horns Screaming goat horns
Ponder Admire
Sing Call
Seek Yearn
Feel Dream

That table became my checklist. I am not a speedrunner or a redstone genius, so I treated the project like a small expedition rather than a technical build.

Finding Goats Without Wasting a Week

Goats spawn in jagged peaks, frozen peaks, and snowy slopes biomes. If you see a snow-capped mountain, there is a decent chance it has goats. They spawn on world generation and then more slowly afterward. My first herd was on a frozen peak, and I spent an embarrassing amount of time just watching them headbutt each other before I remembered why I was there.

You can try horn-gathering on location, but with eight variants and the need for screaming goats, breeding up a goat farm is basically a requirement if you want the full set. I built a simple pen near my base, brought two goats home with leads, and started breeding. It was slow, but it gave me a safe place to experiment with the ramming mechanic.

How the Ram Actually Works

If you are in survival and not on peaceful difficulty, there is a chance goats will ram you. Goats check to see if nearby mobs have been entirely stationary every 30 to 300 seconds. If they have, the goat will attempt to ram that mob. So the first rule is simple: stay completely still. It can take a while, but eventually one will charge.

If the goat hits you, nothing happens. If you can get out of the way in time and the goat hits a wall behind you, it will drop its horn. The catch is the wall material. It only works if the wall is made of log, stone, packed ice, iron ore, copper ore, or emerald ore. Player-placed blocks are fine, but the goat has to hit one of those materials. Use anything else, and the goat will not drop a horn even if it slams into the wall.

The telegraph is brief but readable. The goat will face directly toward you and bow its head lower than usual. At that point, move. Getting out of the way is easier said than done, especially on a narrow mountain ledge. That is why the best farm design is a long enclosure with walls made from one of the listed blocks. Get a goat at one end and stand at the other. The length gives you time to step aside once you see the charge-up animation. If you succeed, you are rewarded with one or two goat horns, because sometimes goats lose one horn and other times they lose both.

Screaming Goats and the Last Four

Screaming goats make up only about two percent of goat spawns. That number is the reason my farm mattered. I bred goats until a screaming kid appeared, then kept that line separate so I could farm the rare half of the horn table without hiking across every snowy slope in the world. The last four horns can only be obtained from screaming goats, so if you want Admire, Call, Yearn, and Dream, you cannot skip this step.

The Pillager Outpost Shortcut

There is a slightly easier path if you do not care about having every horn immediately. Pillager Outposts have goat horns in their chests, and each Outpost is guaranteed to contain one goat horn. I cleared one outpost during a side trip and found Feel in the chest. That saved me one ramming session, but it did not replace the farm. The outpost gives you a horn, not control over which variant you get.

My Final Setup

By the end, my goat horn farm looked like this:

  • A long stone-walled pen with a natural mountain wall on one side.

  • A separate breeding pen for regular goats and screaming goats.

  • A chest of spare walls made from stone, logs, and packed ice.

  • A patient routine: stand still, wait for the head bow, step aside, and listen for the thunk.

  • A checklist of all eight horns so I did not keep farming duplicates.

It took a few evenings, but I finally had the full set. If you try this in 2026, the project is still dangerous, silly, and deeply satisfying. Bring blocks, bring patience, and do not stand in front of a goat unless you are ready to move. 🐐🎺
